Head and Facial Plastic Surgery

Head and facial plastic surgery is most coveted for reconstruction.  A recent poll suggests that out of the five most sought after cosmetic surgery procedures, the head and facial area take up the top three. This does not surprise plastic surgeons. Our modern day society is more focused on physical appearance than it has ever been. Beauty is sometimes more prized than virtue and personality. There is a saying that first impressions are everything, and when impressions are based upon the look and attractiveness of one’s facial features, getting or maintaining an appealing face may be viewed as top priority.  Plastic surgery is viewed as an aid to rid a person of common aging troubles such as wrinkles, sagging necks, unstable chins and the drooping of the skin around the eyebrow area.  Plastic surgery is also a choice for people who have physical birth defects/abnormalities, who are unsatisfied with a certain body feature or who have suffered some sort of facial damage due to excessive sun exposure or smoking.

Every person’s face is different and, of course, no two faces are alike. To keep make things simpler, surgeons sectioned the face into thirds.

  • The Upper Third: This section of the face includes the area from your upper eye area (eye lids) to the top of your brow. Surgeries that fall under this category would be brow lifts and eyelid surgery. These two types of surgeries are formally titled blepharoplasty.
  • The Middle Third: This section of the face includes the lower eye area, ears, nose and cheeks. Surgeries that fall under this category are rhinoplasty (nose reconstruction), cheek implants, or otoplasty (ear reconstruction).
  • The Lower Third: This section of the face includes the mouth, lips, chin and neck. Surgeries that fall under this category are neck lifts, chin implants and lip injections.

Speaking with your board certified surgeon may help you determine what you want or need most. Say you are seeking a face lift to remove sagging skin and fat, and to reduce wrinkles. Your surgeon will inform you that face lifts are effective with the removal of unwanted skin or fat, but not so great with eliminating wrinkles. These are facts that you need to know before choosing a procedure.

Facial surgery can drastically reconstruct your appearance, give you satisfactory results, and essentially halt the time machine to give a fresher, younger looking face. The cost, risk and recovery time is different depending on the procedure. Having open dialogue with your plastic surgeon will help you to get the healthy, life-changing results that you desire.
