Skin Discoloration

Skin Discoloration

Face it, everyone wants beautiful, smooth, even toned skin, but that is not always possible.
Scars, freckles, birthmarks, moles, pregnancy mask (melasma), and age spots are a few of the conditions that can cause skin discoloration, making the affected areas lighter or darker than they normally are.

The amount of pigment and the amount of blood flow beneath the skin will determine the color the skin takes on.

Cyanosis (bluish colored skin)
If you have cyanosis you have a bluish tint to your skin, and this is from not having enough oxygen in your blood. This bluish coloring is sometimes a sign of lung or heart disease and it usually affects all of your skin in some way.

White Patches
You can develop white patches on your skin if you have a loss of pigmentation, infection. Healed skin after scarring or injury can be white and halo nevus (the skin around whiteheads) is also prone to white coloring.

Darker Discolorations
Included in this category are moles, sunburns, and pregnancy mask.

Severe Discolorations
This group of discolorations includes hypo-pigmentation and vitiligo.

Tip – Laser therapy and prescription skin lighteners have been successful in bringing discolored skin to a more balanced state.
