Birthmarks
Birthmarks, or “vascular anomalies”, are harmless clusters of blood vessels in the skin that appear before or soon after birth. However, if the birthmark covers a large amount of the arms, body or face, the social stigmas and emotional trauma can be problematic.
No one knows the cause of birthmarks, but they affect one tenth of all newborns. Although, we do know that birthmarks are not caused by some problem the mother faced during pregnancy or inheritance. Some birthmarks will fade away without any help, but if it doesn’t, laser therapy can effectively remove birthmarks. However, if the patient is a young child, doctors recommend that the birthmark be left alone unless it interferes with everyday living.
Birthmarks are as unique as they are common. They come in various shapes, types, and colors and may be flat or raised from the skin.
